Glorified Gluttony
It’s mooncake time!
I have enjoyed mooncakes as long as i can remember, without knowing what it really means. So, for this post, i googled mooncakes and probably you know more than i do. Feel free to add what you know in the comment section.
I asked my mom what’s the story behind the mooncakes and she said the folk tale was it is a medium to distribute messages discreetly during war time to the prisoners. Wikipedia probably has a better explanation than mine.
Anyway, i love the black bean paste filling on the mooncake. Lotus seed is considered one of the more luxurious filling.
Here is a photo of the mooncakes with lotus seed filling with yolk from salted duck eggs. I personally does not like the yolk, so it’s all for hubby. The paste is dense, sweet (usually. Nowadays they seem to prefer less sweet mooncakes) and the texture is somewhat soft. The outer layer is usually decorated with exquisite chinese character.
But here is the twist,
My best friend gave me a box of mooncakes that are extraordinary, she happens to bought it from singapore. They are not your typical mooncakes. Its mini snow skin mooncakes.
box is pretty, that’s for sure…
Flavours:
Champagne truffle & chocolate ganache snow skin mooncake
Feulletine Hazelnut with wafer crunch nuts snow skin mooncake
Baileys chocolate snow skin mooncake
Rum & Raisin chocolate truffle snow skin mooncake
They are awesomeeeee! The skin is soft and it reminds me of kue ayas with familiar dense and sweet paste on the inside. Instead of the ugly egg yolk, these snow skin mooncakes are filled with ganaches and chocolate balls. All yummy.
next time i meet her, i will ask where she bought it…
Happy mooncake time!
