Quick post about the dressing.

It is apparently very very easy to make caesar salad dressing, so don’t buy the bottled ones.

Dressing (enough for two hungry giants)

1/2 can anchovies

1/2 whole lemon squeezed (or teeennyyy tiny lime juice)

1 clove garlic finely minced

5 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoon red wine vinegar

1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce

1 egg yolk

1 tablespoon dijon mustard

1 teaspoon of honey

Method

chop then crush garlic and achovies together until they are fine paste, whisk other ingredients rapidly.

How easy is that? I found the recipe online and tweak it a little bit. I haven’t tried it with honey yet, but hubby suggested it, and i think it would actually help balance the tangy and fresh taste with a bit of sweet hint for the dressing. It’s all about balance eh…

Tips:

1. might want to wash and dry the baby cos lettuce way ahead, then chill in the fridge for approximately 1/2 hour or more (do not even try to do a shortcut by placing it in the freezer… it will not work ..trust me.. it is from my own experience…). When i say dry the lettuce, i mean really really dry, not kinda dry, not moist, not sprinkled with water… DRY. Also, baby cos lettuce taste better than the full grown ones.

2. bacon… the more the merrier.. chop em in chunky sizes, place in a hot tefal, stir occasionally.

3. croutons… toast them in bacon’s fat + olive oil. YUMMY.

4. since the dressing use raw eggs, try to finish em in one go.

5. boil some eggs then place on top of the salad, apparently egg yolk with salad goes really well.

6. if you are trying to get rid some of the love handles on the side, this salad will fill you up. trust me you won’t be hungry till the next meal.

lemme know if u try it…

Ending 2009 with a bit of reflection, it has been one of the best times in my life. Life changing decisions were made and i’m very grateful for each one of them.

Biggest decision was a lifetime promise i made to stick around during good times and bad times, in sickness and in health, for better or worse, i even sealed it with a ring.

Followed by numerous trips here and there, sampling food and was rewarded with taste that i have never tried before and it was so good that it knocks my socks off and lasted in my memory as one of the best food i’ve ever tasted, EVER!

So, here it is, an impossible attempt to list the great food i’ve tasted. Trying to limit to only lucky 8.

8. Carl’s Jr, singapore. I know this is patethic to include junk food but this ain’t junk at all. Chargrilled burger made to order, with chunky chipsssss…how can you say it is junk…

7. Bebek Goreng Suryo, senopati jakarta has to share a spot with Bebek Bengil, Ubud Bali. It ain’t fair to compare one minus the scenary.

6. Bakmi Tan and Bakmi Khek in Muara Karang are best Saturday breakfast menu in 2009

5. Warung Bu Kris, ayam penyet at Pluit. Never tasted the original location at Surabaya yet, but it would be very promising i think.

4. Soto Lombok, Malang. Lots of koya and lime juice. Yum!

3. During our Singapore trip, we are fortunate to sample a couple of Hainan chicken rice and my personal favourite is surprisingly Lucky Plaza’s food court cos they have tastier chilli garlic sauce. And yes, i’ve been to Boo Tong Kee’s.

2. Apollo’s banana leaf restaurant in Little India, singapore. Their fish head curry was as good as people said. Recommended by Bourdain himself.

Drum rolls please….

1. This spot has to be Huen Phen, Chiang Mai. Nothern Thai food and the single best dish is fried somtam (papaya salad) fresh, crispy and citrus-ie at the same time.

So there, if i don’t remember it by now, it won’t make it to the list. I hope everyone has a safe new year. Don’t eat too much –> that’s for me (i’m posting this while waiting for my roast pork, roast duck and salted chicken for family dinner tonite) hehe.

Happy New Year folks, i will see you next year!

More of singapore trip post (because i can’t sleeep!!!!! it’s 2.30 in the morning! – damn caramel frapucinno and i didn’t order the whipped cream)

eniways!

We stayed in chinatown and of cos on day one hubby and i explored the eatery places in chinatown, what else to do? shopping for souvenirs? oh that is so last decade..besides, those made in china souvenirs are so overpriced. So, no shopping.

If you are in chinatown, in singapore, south east asia… what do you think is the best way to name the street that sell chinese hawkers food? you guessed it right, SMITH street! yay….

try to remember to bring your own tissue, singaporeans do not provide tissues even if you are eating chilli crab at a fine restaurant.. they give you wet tissue and they probly charge you with it.

this is what we ended up eating. FYI, i love fried food, i love burgers and i love a&w, will never say no to any of those.

You pick and choose what you want to eat and they are only 1/2 fried. They will fry it just after you ordered. Cost you around SGD 1-2 per piece.

However, the best thing is the sauce! it’s bit sour and sweet. The perfect sauce for the fried things. These are fish cakes, go hiong, and otak-otak i think. Yummy!

No touting (dictionary : attempt to sell by typically by pestering people by aggressive and bold manner [pestering dictionary - cari sendiri])

food is good, area is clean, no body touted us, great selection for supper and dessert. Will come back to ehm.. smith street in chinatown… i bet they wrote it as Es Mi Th street back in the old days! i mean… come onnn… you are spoiling thiss… it’s chinatown… – disappointed it’s not like Teck Kee Tang Lin Bao st… or Mac Kee Bao… (please leave the message if you get the joke)

It’s mooncake time!

I have enjoyed mooncakes as long as i can remember, without knowing what it really means. So, for this post, i googled mooncakes and probably you know more than i do. Feel free to add what you know in the comment section.

I asked my mom what’s the story behind the mooncakes and she said the folk tale was it is a medium to distribute messages discreetly during war time to the prisoners. Wikipedia probably has a better explanation than mine.

Anyway, i love the black bean paste filling on the mooncake. Lotus seed is considered one of the more luxurious filling.

Here is a photo of the mooncakes with lotus seed filling with yolk from salted duck eggs. I personally does not like the yolk, so it’s all for hubby. The paste is dense, sweet (usually. Nowadays they seem to prefer less sweet mooncakes) and the texture is somewhat soft. The outer layer is usually decorated with exquisite chinese character.

But here is the twist,

My best friend gave me a box of mooncakes that are extraordinary, she happens to bought it from singapore. They are not your typical mooncakes. Its mini snow skin mooncakes.

box is pretty, that’s for sure…

Flavours:

Champagne truffle & chocolate ganache snow skin mooncake

Feulletine Hazelnut with wafer crunch nuts snow skin mooncake

Baileys chocolate snow skin mooncake

Rum & Raisin chocolate truffle snow skin mooncake

They are awesomeeeee! The skin is soft and it reminds me of kue ayas with familiar dense and sweet paste on the inside. Instead of the ugly egg yolk, these snow skin mooncakes are filled with ganaches and chocolate balls. All yummy.

next time i meet her, i will ask where she bought it…

Happy mooncake time!

When you ask a singaporean local, what’s good there, they will mention chilli crab along with the other char kwe tiau, carrot cakes, hainam chicken rice and fish head curry. I had the privilage to travel to singapore for few days and i did just what you have guessed, culinary trip and tried what’s good in town.

So, here’s some of my post… will update according to the mood of my internet connection (i’m sure people in indo truly understand what i’m going thru)

Chilli Crab at Jumbo Restaurant, Katong East Coast.

To get there: stop at closest MRT station at Bedok then catch a cab

They have a lot of restaurants that serve chilli crab at East Coast, Nosignboard is one of the famous one, known for its chilli crab and expensive price (they open one at Pacific Place too… ground floor). Also, Long Beach and they open one in Senayan City basement, also quite expensive.

But hey, we are talking about crabs here, seafood is expensive anyway… i pick the least expensive one. How’s that?

Some people love crab roe, some say it’s too high in cholesterol. Too bad, i only eat crab roe.

Can i say that unfortunately i have to dissapoint you, Sedap Malam has better black pepper crab compared to this chilli crab or kepiting saus padang as we say it here in indo. I think this chilli crab is overrated and it is expensive too. It was SGD 40 for 1 kg of crab = IDR 280,000.

at least i ate it…so i won’t be curious… rite?

more posts are coming (still figuring out on how photoshop works… geez… technology.. they are supposed to help you)

Salad with Grilled Beef – Simply Thai – Hongkong

aaah… my travel wouldn’t be complete without taking photos of food. Delicious food of course.

Let me tell you about the restaurant first, it is in Times Square, HongKong level 11. Very nice ambiance, sophisticated decor and most importantly nice food. Too bad those girls couldn’t eat a lot. We had the grilled beef salad, with fried tofu and green curry chicken. Very lovely evening after the whole day shopping.

I love the dressing on the salad. Beef was tender, it was medium done tho. The chef has well prepared the salad with thinly sliced cucumber, i can tell that quality matters for them and i appreciate it. The colours are just feast for the eyes, the red and green complimenting each other.

i would definitely comeback for other dishes if i ever get the chance to go back to Hongkong (sometime soon, fingers crossed). With good quality of the dishes and a lot of care and effort has been put in to the restaurant, it is not expensive meal at all. Two thumbs up for me.

Nasi Tumpeng

This is traditional indonesian food to be enjoyed during a celebration or any other happy occasion. In this case, in my office we have a celebration of two department joining forces.

To start the celebration usually there is prayer and hope for good luck, then the most important people cut the top of the rice as symbol.

There’s so many dishes on the side,
